Gee, I think, Tavares? Were they Puerto Rican? That S instead of a Z in their name suggests otherwise and, sure enough, the surname is of Portugese derivation.

A trip to Wikipedia tells me they were a brother act (Ralph, Pooch, Chubby, Butch, and Tiny Tavares), a New Bedford, Mass, family descended from Cape Verdean immigrants. Cape Verde was an upopulated archipelago off Western Africa that the Portugese colonized and imported slaves to. Importing slaves from one part of Africa to another is fucked up --- but I gueess not more than much of the slave trade.

Anyhow, their independence came bloodlessly in 1975 and their favorite sons Tavares celebrated with the number one hit "It Only Takes a Minute."

If you believe wikipedia, Aerosmith's Joey Kramer earned his funk stripes playing in their backing band.

I just found my autograph picture of Rusty looking through some papers from
that day. One of the best opening days ever at ol' Shea.

Felix Millan started in 162 games twice. Once as a Brave and once as a Met
in 1975.
